I HAVE BEEN INTRIGUED BY THIS STORY EVER SINCE I READ THE EXCERPTS IN THE NEW YORKER AND THEN SAW THE RICHARD BROOKES FILM ADAPTATION OF THE BOOK IN 67'. SINCE THEN I'VE COMPILED QUITE A BIT OF WRITTEN AND VISUAL DATA, INCLUDING THE CRIME SCENE IMAGES.
BUT WHAT I'D LIKE TO KNOW IS...WHAT IS THE REAL VERSION OF WHAT WENT DOWN WITH THIS STORY. THERE ARE, I'VE COUNTED, ABOUT 5 DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF EVENTS. IS THERE ANYONE WITH AUTHORITY ON THIS CASE THAT REALY KNOWS? I'VE SPOKEN TO THE ARCHIVIST AT THE FINNEY COUNTY LIBRARY BUT IT DIDN'T HELP MUCH. I'VE TRIED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH GARDEN CITY SHERIF KEVIN BASQUE WITH OUT MUCH SUCCESS.

Here is an aerial map of Holcomb as taken from mapquest.com.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&formtype=address&popflag=0&latitude=&longitude=&name=&phone=&level=&cat=&address=&city=Holcomb&state=KS&zipcode=

If I'm not mistaken, you need to go south on Main Street from Jones Avenue. Main Street will intersect Oak Avenue on the right. Turn right on Oak Avenue. Oak Avenue actually dead ends at the drive which leads to the Clutter home. Off to the right of this point is South West Street. You will probably not be able to enter the drive without risking being blasted by the current owners of the home. Last I heard they had posted no trespassing signs at the entrance. However, I have also heard that ownerpship of the property may have changed hands in the last year and a half, so the current owners may be more amenable to visitors.

Notice that as you pan south and west of Jones Avenue, a collection of several large buildings and smaller ones surrounded first by dirt roads and then by large open fields appears just south of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad line. It will lie in the lower left of the map. This is River Valley Farm, the old Clutter homestead. It is actually large enough to be considered a geographical landmark. There are two large metal buildings oriented north and south. To the northeast of the northernmost building is where the house is located. I have seen modern pictures of the house, and it looks much the same as it did the day the murders took place. Good luck finding it.

If I remember correctly, it's south of 50. It's on the road the High School is on and south of there. It's on a road off to the right.

Joe Galloway also says he has the works of Enie Pyle.

Joe Galloway " And they had wonderful murder cases in

the flatlands of Kansas, I worked on the appeals

of Richard Hickock and Perry Smith".

It details the 1959 slaying of Herbert Clutter, a wealthy farmer from Holcomb, Kansas, his wife, and two

Two ex-convicts on parole from the Kansas State Penitentiary, Richard "Dick" Hickock and Perry Edward

Smith, committed the robbery and murders on November 15, 1959.
